SMART Solar Project in Maharashtra State

The Maharashtra SMART Solar Project is a state-government initiative aimed at making solar energy affordable and accessible to low-income households across Maharashtra. It is officially known as the Swayampurna Maharashtra Residential Rooftop (SMART) Solar Scheme and was launched to supplement central government solar subsidies with additional state support so that economically weaker families can install rooftop solar systems.

📌 Purpose and Target

  • The scheme is designed to boost rooftop solar adoption among households that consume less than 100 units of electricity per month, especially those below the poverty line (BPL) and economically weaker sections.
  • It aims to help up to 5 lakh (500,000) households across the state become more energy self-reliant, reduce electricity bills, and possibly earn extra income by selling surplus solar power back to the grid.

💰 Subsidy & Financial Benefits

  • The SMART scheme provides significant subsidies (up to ~95 %) on rooftop solar installations when combined with central government support under schemes like the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
  • For example, under the combined subsidy structure:
    • BPL households might pay only a small contribution (e.g., ~₹2,500 for a 1 kW system) with the rest covered by central and state government subsidies
    • Other low-use consumers (SC/ST, EWS) receive proportionately high subsidies too, reducing upfront costs significantly.

⚙️ How It Works

  • Households install grid-connected rooftop solar systems on rooftops of homes — typically 1 kW to small capacities based on consumption.
  • The scheme is implemented with oversight from state authorities and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (MSEDCL), ensuring quality solar installations and maintenance.
  • This initiative aligns with broader efforts to increase distributed solar capacity (solar on rooftops rather than only utility-scale plants) and support Maharashtra’s climate goals.

🌱 Impact

  • The SMART Solar project complements India’s national rooftop solar mission and is expected to dramatically increase solar adoption among low-income households in Maharashtra. It also contributes to reducing dependency on conventional electricity and lowering carbon emissions
